FRANKIE PUGLISI
Owner and Educational Director
Pilates Institute of America
After graduating from the University of Sheffield, England, where she was born and raised, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Physiology, Frankie came to the United States and after studying the health and fitness market, she started her own fitness service company. Nearly 17 years later Frankie continues to enjoy tremendous success with her health and wellness career, which has evolved into various different businesses.
For more than 6 years Frankie owned and operated "Frankie’s Fitness Factory", a personal training company based in New York City, which contracted with corporate and commercial facilities to provide personal training and aerobics services. Having worked in many corporate and commercial fitness facilities and having been involved in several health club and gym designs, Frankie’s main business focus was to provide top quality fitness training services. Frankie personally hand picked and trained her staff to be the best they could be, providing quality services to many people in the New York tri-state area. Frankie has worked with groups such as Dean Witter Morgan Stanley, American Home Products, Pfizer, The Princeton and Harvard University Clubs and New York District Schools.
Another aspect of Frankie’s business during this time was Power Flex Yoga. Frankie is an accomplished Yoga instructor both on a group and individual level. With over 20 years of practicing this art, Frankie developed her own style and way of instructing called "Power Flex Yoga". She began teaching others her method of Power Flex Yoga and offering Instructor Training and Certification workshops through "Low Fat Yoga", her own company. Potential instructors would undergo a thorough training in classical Hatha Yoga techniques, and specific Power Flex Yoga techniques, cueing, body alignment and teaching skills. Successful candidates demonstrated competence in practical and written exams based on the Low Fat Yoga Instructor Training Manual produced and written by Frankie. Once trained and certified, Low Fat Yoga instructors were placed in commercial, private and corporate facilities throughout New York and New Jersey. Frankie also produced a relaxation
audiocassette available to her students and used by her teachers in classes. As part of her on-going Yoga business Frankie also gives seminars and lectures on topics such as "Stress Reduction in the Workplace", "Relaxation for Pregnancy and Chronic Illness", and "Breathing for Life". Future workshops include "Power Yoga for the Personal Trainer" and "Pairs Yoga".
As if these two businesses were not enough Frankie also found time to teach Aerobics and Yoga classes at various commercial health clubs in New York and New Jersey as well as consult one-on-one with clients in their homes. Her clients included lawyers, doctors, business executives and homemakers.
Frankie enjoys her fitness career and aspires to be the best fitness consultant there is. She is constantly improving her knowledge base and credentials by adding certifications and continuing education workshops to her repertoire. To date, Frankie is developing a series of continuing education workshops designed for the fitness consultant so that she can pass on her wide array of knowledge and skills, not just to the general public, but also to the fitness population.
In the spring of 2000, Frankie moved to Wellington, Florida and developed her personal training clientele to include Olympic champion show jumpers, dressage riders and polo players, business owners, young mothers and retirees. She continues to work as she did in New York City, both as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor at health clubs in the area but has expanded her base to include Pilates.
Training people one-on-one out of her own private, fully equipped studio, Frankie developed a very focused and dedicated Pilates clientele. She also developed relationships with the Wellington Tennis Center and has helped to train the advanced youth tennis program. She has organized and taught adult education programs at several local community centers and, because of the weather and the large senior population in Florida, Frankie has been able to capitalize on her aquatic therapy skills and knowledge of senior exercise becoming a Water Exercise teacher in demand at many senior housing developments and adult communities.
Frankie developed the Pilates Institute of America in 1997 when she saw the need for good quality Pilates instructors. Due to the high demand for her skills and expertise, the company expanded after only six months of operation, at which time Lee, Frankie’s husband, became the President of PIA and took charge of the marketing. PIA has since become one of the largest and the fastest growing Pilates education organizations in the United States and now owns and operates over 5 studios in the Palm Beach area of Florida, with plans to expand nationwide. The Pilates Institute of America organization offers full certifications and teacher training for all aspects of Pilates instruction in Weekend workshops nationwide. Frankie overseas operations, develops new programs, writes manuals and certifies students in her own method of Pilates. Pilates Institute of America also offers intensive teacher training workshops through local health clubs
so that Pilates Matwork classes and instructors are available to meet the ever growing demand for this unique program.
In 2000, Frankie opened the first
Pilates Studio in Wellington, the equestrian
capitol of the world in the winter months.
The high demand for this type of exercise in
the equestrian community means that business
has grown fast and Wellington Pilates Studio
continues to thrive year round. From humble
beginnings in a space only 10 ft by 12 ft
and only herself to service clientele,
Frankie has successfully grown out of two
larger spaces to currently own and operate 3
separate studios and manage over 12
instructors. Frankie and her staff train
some of the top Dressage riders and coaches,
Olympic Show jumpers and professional Polo
players. Wellington Pilates offers private,
semi private and small group Pilates lessons and stretch classes, both in its facilities and on location at client’s homes.
In a few short years, Frankie Puglisi and her unique, authentic Pilates program, with the help of her husband Lee Puglisi and his marketing expertise, has taken on the health and wellness industry by storm and, as always happens, the cream rises to the top.
Frankie hopes to be able to continue to build upon her successful fitness foundations by adding to her qualifications, experience and clientele. New Pilates programs, equipment design, books and videos are next on the list, but for now, Frankie will continue to make people happy and healthy through her hard work, dedication and by her own example.
Her motto is: "Good health, vitality for life and increased longevity can be considered states of mental fitness and are more than merely a trip to the gym."
